Created With Purpose
August 26, 2024The humanity of the unborn can be found in many stories in the Bible. By far my favorite is the story of Jacob and Esau.
“Isaac prayed to the Lord on behalf of his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord answered him and Rebekah his wife conceived. But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If it is so, why then am I this way?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.” When her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.” Genesis 25:21-24
When Rebekah inquired of the Lord concerning her pregnancy God’s response is an incredible example of the value of human life from within the womb. He didn’t speak of them as potential humans, God told her of their future because they were already Jacob and Esau! He called them two nations, that two people would be separated from her body, that one would be stronger and the older would serve the younger. Incredible!
We are fully human from the moment of conception, we do not become human at some stage but are fully human in every stage. We were all once an embryo, we were all once a fetus, life is incredible! There is no question that God values all life from the moment of conception. The same word is used in the Bible to describe unborn babies, newborn babies, and children, here are some examples;
“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” Luke 1:41
In Luke 1:41 the word baby is used to describe the unborn baby John.
“This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:12
In Luke 2:12 the word baby is used to describe the newborn baby Jesus.
“And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them. But Jesus called for them, saying, “Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Luke 18:15-16
In Luke 18:15 the word babies is used to describe the children they were bringing to Jesus.
Our unborn children are just as valuable as our born children and deserve the same protection. All life is precious to God and therefore should be precious to us. If you are in an unplanned pregnancy please know that you are not alone and that child you are carrying is fearfully and wonderfully made by God, our value is never based on the manner of our conception or if we were planned or not.
